Since when does jumping a dead battery damage a car's electrontics?

I've jumped many many types of car with many many other types of cars and never had an issue. What are these mythical "surges" that can damage modern cars?

I can try to take a picture of my MB owner's manual that tells you not to jump the car or give another car a jump because it could do harm to the electrical system.

Since GM decided to make their PCMs out of PB&J. Low voltage, followed by a quick 14.2v spike, can cause PCM issues that may or may not be immediately evident. That's why, in the late '90s, GM started installing jump terminals that were heavily isolated. That way, in the event of a spike, you're not having to shell out 440 bucks for a new computer.

A friend's volvo's ECM and my younger brother's Saturn odometer have both been fried, but I believe in both cases due to jumping *backward*, rather than the act of jumping itself.

Just dont do it in a 80s-90s benz with an OVP relay, it causes all kinds of issues. Relay isnt too expensive, but it causes gauge, drivability and HVAC issues

I have jumped/ have been jumped in my '87 Benz quite a few times - no issues yet, because giant diesel battery buffer, also diesel. HURR.

still got that #14 head on there too? Yeah the diesels still get it, but less. I bought my SL500 knowing it was the OVP that got toasted and was causing all types of issues, so it was cheap

I was on BaT, and a listed E30 for sale apparently had an ABS light on. One of the commentators mentioned that the light can be caused by not following the correct battery jump procedure and may damage a diode.

Somehow, a friend's Chrysler 300's battery died. After many attempts of trying to jump it off by people not knowing what they were doing, they damaged the emissions control computer.

Some cars I would think wouldn't really notice the effect of jumping off (like a Fox body mustang) but a car reliant on finicky, sensitive electronics, I would be apprehensive of.

friend's '05 Nissan Maxima spiked during a jump start and the fuel needle spun over the top and got stuck.

Man, when I was stuck with my Toyota Sienna that for a few days needed a jump after everytime it stopped, someone pulled up in a full sized S class to jump me. Whoops.

I think the most likely scenario where damage could occur during a jump-start is if one of the vehicles has a loose battery terminal. Removing the jumper cables could cause a disconnection of the battery while the engine is running. NEVER disconnect the battery while the engine is running, or you risk frying everything in the car. Even in older cars you can blow out dash lamps and other electrical components.

I just tell them my battery is under the seat (it really is) and that its a pain in the ass to get to, and that I dont' have cables (also true)...

Wow am I glad I don't own a car that can't handle a blip from it's own alternator.
